Feet and inches in, metres out
The awkward part of this conversion is never the multiplication — it is that the input is two numbers. Height, room dimensions and ceiling drops arrive as "five ten" or "8 ft 6 in", and most converters demand you turn that into decimal feet before they will look at it.
This one does not. Type 5'10", 5 ft 10 in or
5.833 and all three produce 1.778 m. The page echoes back how it read your entry,
so an ambiguous apostrophe cannot silently change the answer by a factor of twelve.
The factor
One foot is exactly 0.3048 m — a definition, not a measurement. Multiply feet by 0.3048 for metres, or by 30.48 for centimetres. Inches convert at exactly 2.54 cm each, which is the same statement divided by twelve.
- 6 ft = 1.8288 m
- 5 ft 10 in = 70 in = 177.8 cm = 1.778 m
- 8 ft = 2.4384 m
- 100 ft = 30.48 m
Which unit does the form want?
For height on a visa, passport, medical or gym form, the answer is almost always centimetres, as a whole number. Convert once from your feet-and-inches figure and round at the end — do not convert a height you have already rounded to the nearest inch, because that rounding is worth up to 1.3 cm on its own.
For construction, metres to three decimal places (that is, to the millimetre) is the convention on European drawings.
Where feet survive in metric countries
Aviation is the big one: altitudes and flight levels are in feet almost worldwide, and a flight level of FL350 means 35,000 ft, or 10,668 m. Diving is split, with depths in metres in most of the world and feet in the US. Climbing and hiking guidebooks in the UK still quote summit heights in feet as often as metres — Ben Nevis is 1,345 m or 4,413 ft.
Squares and cubes convert differently
A common and expensive mistake: square feet do not convert with 0.3048. Area scales with the square of the length ratio, so 1 sq ft = 0.09290304 m² and you divide by 10.7639 to go from square feet to square metres. Volume cubes it: 1 cu ft = 0.0283168 m³. This page converts linear length only — using it on an area figure will make a room look eleven times too big.
Questions
How many metres is 6 feet?
1.8288 m exactly, since a foot is defined as exactly 0.3048 m. Six foot two is 1.8796 m.
Can I type feet and inches together?
Yes — 5'10", 5 ft 10 in and 5ft10 are all read correctly, and the page shows you how it interpreted your entry so there is no ambiguity.
Which figure do visa and passport forms want?
Usually centimetres as a whole number, which is shown alongside the metre result. Round to the nearest centimetre rather than the nearest inch — converting a rounded inch value loses about a centimetre of accuracy.
What about square feet to square metres?
That is a different conversion: divide by 10.7639, because the ratio squares. This page handles linear length only.
