Write on the left, see the rendered result on the right. Nothing is uploaded; the optional autosave stores your draft in this browser only.

Off. Your draft is lost when you close the tab.

Starting the network probe…

The counter above wraps fetch, XMLHttpRequest and navigator.sendBeacon in this tab and counts every call. It does not block anything — it just reports.

Two ways to verify independently

  1. Turn off Wi-Fi or enable airplane mode, then use the tool. It keeps working, because the page is already fully loaded.
  2. Open your browser devtools, switch to the Network tab, clear it, and run the tool. No new row appears.

Why this matters

In 2025 researchers found that popular online formatters had retained tens of thousands of user-submitted snippets — JSONFormatter.org and CodeBeautify together exposed roughly 80,000 saved documents, many containing live cloud credentials, private keys and internal database connection strings, because “format this” quietly meant “upload this”. A separate incident exposed roughly 3.5 million user PDFs on a document-conversion service. The only structural fix is not sending the data in the first place: this site is served under a Content-Security-Policy whose connect-src contains no third-party origin, so a request off this device cannot be made even by accident.

Line breaks, the thing everyone gets wrong

In CommonMark, a single newline inside a paragraph is not a line break — it renders as a space, which is why a hand-wrapped paragraph comes out as one flowing line. To force a break you either end the line with two spaces (invisible, and stripped by most editors) or use a backslash.

GitHub comments, GitLab, Slack and most chat-adjacent renderers break the rule and treat every newline as a break, which is why text that looks right in an issue looks wrong on a static site. The treat single newlines as line breaks switch matches that behaviour, so you can preview whichever target you are writing for.

The preview is sanitised

Markdown allows raw HTML, and this preview renders the safe subset of it. Everything else is filtered before it reaches the page: script, style, iframe, object, embed, form, link, meta and base are removed entirely; every inline event handler and every style attribute is stripped; and any URL whose scheme is not http, https, mailto, tel or a relative path is dropped, which blocks javascript: links. Links open in a new tab with rel="noopener".

Your source is never modified. Only what is displayed is filtered, and a note appears whenever something was removed so you know the rendered output differs from the raw HTML you wrote.

Autosave, and how to turn it off

Autosave is off when you arrive. Switch it on and your draft is written to this browser’s localStorage roughly half a second after you stop typing — on this device, in this browser, under this origin. There is no account, no sync and no server copy. The panel shows the time of the last save, and the delete saved draft button removes it immediately. Turning the switch off also deletes it.

Two limits worth knowing: localStorage is typically capped at 5–10 MB per origin, and it is unavailable in some private-browsing modes. If a save fails, the panel says so rather than pretending it worked.

Getting the document out

  • Copy Markdown for pasting into a repository, an issue or a CMS.
  • Copy HTML for a rich-text editor or an email client — most will preserve the formatting on paste.
  • Download .md for version control.
  • Download .html for a standalone file you can open in a browser or import into Word.
  • Print and choose “Save as PDF” for a quick document; for a proper conversion use Markdown to PDF.

Why write in a tab with no server

Drafts are private by default in a way that a hosted editor cannot be: an incident write-up, a resignation letter, a performance review, a security disclosure. This page loads once and then needs no network at all — you can disconnect and keep writing, and the panel under the editor counts the requests the page makes so you can confirm the number stays at zero.

Questions

Where is my draft stored?

Nowhere, unless you turn on autosave — and then only in this browser's localStorage, on this device. There is no account and no sync. The panel shows when it last saved and there is a permanent "delete saved draft" button next to it.

Which Markdown flavour does the preview use?

GitHub Flavored Markdown: pipe tables, task lists, strikethrough, fenced code blocks and autolinks, on top of CommonMark. There is an option to treat a single newline as a line break, which matches how GitHub comments behave but not how CommonMark paragraphs do.

Is raw HTML in my Markdown rendered?

Only the safe parts. The preview runs through an allowlist sanitiser: script, style, iframe, form and their friends are removed, every inline event handler is stripped, and any URL that is not http, https, mailto, tel or a relative path is dropped. Your source is never modified — only what is displayed is filtered.

How do the two panes stay in sync?

Scrolling either pane scrolls the other proportionally. It is a ratio, not a line-by-line map, so a document with a very tall image or code block will drift slightly.

Can I export to Word or PDF?

Download the HTML and open it in Word, or use the print button and choose "Save as PDF". For a real .docx there is a dedicated Markdown to Word tool elsewhere on the site.
