The pound is a metric unit too
Since 1959 the international avoirdupois pound has been defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms. That means kilograms to pounds is a division by that number — or a multiplication by 2.2046226218 — and the result is exact rather than approximate. There is no more accurate figure to find; this is the definition.
The familiar "2.2" shortcut is 0.2% low. On a 70 kg body weight that is 340 g, which nobody cares about. On a 20-tonne shipment it is 44 kg, which somebody does.
Three different answers for the same weight
70 kg can correctly be written all of these ways, and different countries expect different ones:
| Form | 70 kg is | Used in |
|---|---|---|
| Kilograms | 70 kg | Almost everywhere, and all medical records |
| Pounds | 154.32 lb | United States |
| Stone and pounds | 11 st 0.3 lb | United Kingdom, Ireland |
| Pounds and ounces | 154 lb 5.2 oz | Parcels, small goods, birth weights |
All four are shown at once here, because converting to plain decimal pounds and then trying to get stone out of it by hand is where the arithmetic usually goes wrong.
Weights worth knowing by heart
- 1 kg = 2.20 lb · 5 kg = 11.02 lb · 10 kg = 22.05 lb
- 20 kg = 44.09 lb — the common checked-bag allowance
- 23 kg = 50.71 lb — the other common allowance, and why the US "50 lb" limit is slightly meaner
- 45 kg = 99.21 lb · 100 kg = 220.46 lb
Gym plates never quite match
An Olympic bar is 20 kg (44.09 lb) in metric gyms and 45 lb (20.41 kg) in American ones. A 20 kg plate is 44.09 lb; a 45 lb plate is 20.41 kg. Loading a bar from a mixed set therefore produces a small but genuine asymmetry, and a "225 lb" bench in an American gym is 102.06 kg, not the 100 kg a metric lifter would call it. Personal records do not convert cleanly, and it is worth recording which set you used.
Mass, weight and force
This converter handles mass. The pound also exists as a unit of force (pound-force), which is the weight of a pound-mass under standard gravity. On Earth the two are numerically equal, which is why the distinction never surfaces in daily life — but if you are converting a spring rating, a thrust figure or a torque, check which pound you have before applying 0.45359237.
Converting a spreadsheet column
Switch to the Batch tab, paste the column, copy the result. Blank lines are kept so it pastes back aligned, and unreadable lines come back empty rather than silently substituted. The whole operation happens in this browser tab — there is no server that could receive the list.
Questions
How many pounds is 1 kg?
2.20462262 lb. The pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kg, so the reverse figure is exact and this one is that value inverted.
Why does the page also show stone?
Because UK and Irish bathroom scales, GP surgeries and gyms still read in stone and pounds. 70 kg is 154.32 lb, which is 11 st 0.3 lb — a number you cannot get from a plain decimal conversion.
Is a pound of mass the same as a pound of force?
No. This converter handles mass (avoirdupois pounds). Pound-force is a unit of weight that depends on local gravity and is only numerically equal to pound-mass at standard gravity.
Can I convert a list of weights at once?
Yes — the Batch tab takes a pasted column and returns a matching column, with blank lines preserved so it pastes straight back into a spreadsheet.
Do the numbers I enter leave my device?
No. Everything is computed by JavaScript in this page. There is no upload, no request, and no analytics call carrying your data.
