The decimal-stone trap
This is the conversion people get wrong more than any other, and it is always the same mistake. A converter says 75 kg is 11.81 stone, and the reader hears "eleven stone eight". It is not. The 0.81 is a fraction of fourteen pounds, so it is 11.34 pounds: 75 kg is 11 st 11.3 lb, nearly four pounds heavier than the misreading.
That is why this page treats stone-and-pounds as the headline answer and decimal stone as the footnote, rather than the other way round.
How the numbers relate
- 1 stone = 14 pounds, exactly
- 1 stone = 6.35029318 kg (14 × 0.45359237)
- 1 kg = 0.157473 stone
So kilograms to stone is a division by 6.35029318; the whole part is the stone and the remainder, multiplied by fourteen, is the pounds.

Why Britain still uses stone
The UK went metric for trade in the 1970s and 1980s but never for body weight. Scales, gyms and conversation still run on stone and pounds while GP records, prescriptions and every official form run on kilograms — so most British adults know their weight in a unit their doctor does not use. Ireland is the same. Everywhere else, including the United States, the stone disappeared from general use over a century ago.
Historic stones were not all fourteen pounds
Before standardisation the stone varied by trade: eight pounds for meat, fourteen for wool, sixteen for cheese, twenty-four for some produce. The 14 lb stone survived because it was the wool stone, and wool was the trade that mattered. Only that one is still in use, and it is the one this page uses.
Questions
How many kg in a stone?
6.35029318 kg. A stone is 14 pounds, and a pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg, so the figure follows directly.
Why is 11.8 stone not "11 stone 8"?
Because the fraction is of a stone, not of a pound. 11.8 st is 11 st 11.2 lb — 0.8 of 14 pounds is 11.2 pounds, not 8. This is the single most common conversion mistake in the UK and it is why the stone-and-pounds readout is shown separately here.
Which countries still use stone?
Body weight in stone is normal in the UK and Ireland and essentially nowhere else. Even there, medical records are kept in kilograms.
Is stone used for anything other than people?
Historically, for wool, livestock and produce, with different pound counts per stone by trade. Only the 14-pound body-weight stone survives in general use.
