How to calculate a percentage off a price
- Enter the percentage on the sale sign.
- Enter the original price.
- Read the answer: the amount you save and the price you pay, both to the cent. Add a sales tax rate if you want the figure that will appear on the receipt.
Two tables build themselves underneath: your price at every common discount, and your percentage applied to the usual price points. Both are useful when you are comparing a rail of tickets rather than a single item.
The formula
saving = price × percent ÷ 100
you pay = price − saving
Or in one step, which is quicker and less error-prone:
you pay = price × (100 − percent) ÷ 100
What is 20% off $80? Twenty percent of 80 is 16, so you pay $64. In one step: 80 × 0.80 = 64.
Doing it in your head
- 10% — move the decimal one place left. 10% of $47 is $4.70.
- 5% — half of 10%.
- 15% — 10% plus half of 10%.
- 20% — double 10%, or divide by five.
- 25% — divide by four.
- 33% — divide by three.
- 75% — a quarter of the price is what you pay.
- Reverse it — for anything above 50%, work out what you pay rather than what you save. 70% off means you pay 30%, which is 3 × 10%.
Percentages are also commutative, which is occasionally handy: 8% of 50 is the same as 50% of 8, which is 4.

The same figures work in any currency — the arithmetic does not care whether the symbol is a dollar, a pound or a euro.
Percent off, percent of, and percentage points
- 20% of 80 is 16 — the part.
- 20% off 80 is 64 — the whole minus the part. Two very different answers to two very similar phrases.
- A 20 percentage point fall from 50% to 30% is a 40% decrease in relative terms. Points and percent are not interchangeable.
What the sale sign is not telling you
A percentage is only as meaningful as the price it is measured against. Two things are worth checking: whether the "was" price was ever the real selling price, and whether stacked offers combine the way the sign implies. They do not add — 30% off followed by a further 20% off is 44% off, not 50%. Our discount calculator works stacked coupons out step by step.

Questions
What is 20% off $80?
$64. Twenty percent of 80 is 16, so the sale price is 80 − 16 = 64. The shortcut is to multiply by the fraction that survives: 80 × 0.80 = 64, which is one step instead of two.
What is the fastest way to work out a discount in my head?
Take 10% by moving the decimal point one place, then scale it. 30% off £45: 10% is £4.50, so 30% is £13.50, leaving £31.50. For 15%, take 10% and add half of it.
Is the sales tax charged on the discounted price?
Yes in almost every jurisdiction — tax follows what you actually pay, so a discount reduces the tax too. Switch on the tax line to see the total at the till.
How do I go from the sale price back to the original?
Divide the sale price by (1 − discount). A $63 jacket after 30% off started at 63 ÷ 0.7 = $90. Our discount calculator has a dedicated reverse mode for this.
