No rounding — exact cents
- Bill as printed
- $68.40
- Tip at 18%
- $12.31
- Total
- $80.71
- Tip per person
- $6.16
- Total per person
- $40.36
tip base = bill = $68.40 tip = $68.40 × 18% = $12.31 total = $68.40 + $12.31 = $80.71 per head = $80.71 ÷ 2 = $40.36
Cent-exact split across 2 people
| Person | Pays |
|---|---|
| Person 1 | $40.36 |
| Person 2 | $40.35 |
A share that will not divide evenly leaves a remainder of a cent or two. Those odd cents are handed to the first people in the list so the shares add up to exactly $80.71.
| Tip | Tip amount | Total | Per person |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10% | $6.84 | $75.24 | $37.62 |
| 12% | $8.21 | $76.61 | $38.31 |
| 15% | $10.26 | $78.66 | $39.33 |
| 18% | $12.31 | $80.71 | $40.36 |
| 20% | $13.68 | $82.08 | $41.04 |
| 22% | $15.05 | $83.45 | $41.73 |
| 25% | $17.10 | $85.50 | $42.75 |
| 30% | $20.52 | $88.92 | $44.46 |
How to use the tip calculator
- Type the amount printed on the check. Commas and a currency symbol are both fine.
- Pick a tip percentage — tap a preset for the common ones, or drag the slider for anything in between. Everything below updates as you move it.
- Set the number of people. The plus and minus buttons are large enough to hit while you are holding the phone in one hand.
- Optional: switch on tip on the pre-tax subtotal and enter your sales tax rate if you prefer to tip on the food rather than the tax.
- Optional: choose a rounding mode so the total or each person's share lands on a whole number.
The result panel shows the tip, the total, the per-person share and a cent-exact table so the shares always add back up to the bill. Copy the summary to paste into a group chat.
The tip formula
Tipping is two multiplications and one addition:
tip = bill × tip% ÷ 100
total = bill + tip
per person = total ÷ people
On a $68.40 bill at 18%: 68.40 × 0.18 = $12.31 tip, giving a $80.71 total. Split two ways that is $40.36 each — with one cent of rounding difference between the two shares, which the table allocates explicitly rather than hiding.
Tipping before or after tax
Etiquette columns generally say to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, since sales tax is money the restaurant collects for the state rather than revenue for the service. The practical difference is small. On a $100 subtotal with 8.25% tax, a 20% tip on the pre-tax figure is $20.00 and a 20% tip on the $108.25 total is $21.65 — $1.65 apart. If you want the strict version, this calculator divides the tax back out for you rather than making you do it.
How much to tip, by situation
| Situation | Customary US tip | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sit-down restaurant | 18–20% | 15% for adequate service, 25% for exceptional service or a large party |
| Bar, per drink | $1–2 a drink, or 20% on a tab | More for a complex cocktail than for a bottled beer |
| Food delivery | 15–20%, minimum $3–5 | Delivery fees usually go to the platform, not the driver |
| Coffee shop / counter service | 0–15% | Entirely discretionary; the prompt on the card reader is not an obligation |
| Taxi or rideshare | 10–15% | Round up to the next whole amount for short trips |
| Hairdresser or barber | 15–20% | Tip the person who did the work, not the salon |
| Hotel housekeeping | $3–5 a night | Left daily, because the person changes between days |
These are United States norms. Tipping expectations differ sharply elsewhere: service is generally included in Japan and much of continental Europe, where rounding up or leaving 5–10% is already generous, and in some countries a tip can be an unwelcome gesture.
Quick mental maths for tips
- 10% — move the decimal point one place left. $46.80 becomes $4.68.
- 20% — take 10% and double it. $9.36 on that same bill.
- 15% — take 10%, then add half of it again. $4.68 + $2.34 = $7.02.
- 18% — take 20% and subtract a tenth of that. $9.36 − $0.94 ≈ $8.42, within a cent of the exact $8.42.
- Double the tax — a rough shortcut in states where tax is close to 9%, giving about 18%.

Questions
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Etiquette guides say the pre-tax subtotal, because sales tax is not part of the service. In practice most people tip on the printed total, which on an 8% tax rate costs about 1.6% more on a 20% tip. Switch on "tip on the pre-tax subtotal" and enter your tax rate to do it the strict way.
What is a normal tip in the US?
18–20% of the bill is the usual range for table service, 15% for adequate service and 25% for outstanding service. Counter service, takeaway and bars follow different customs, and tipping norms elsewhere in the world are far lower or built into the price.
How does the round-up option work?
Each rounding mode changes the tip, never the bill. "Total up" lifts the total to the next whole unit and gives the difference to the server; "Share up" rounds each person's share up so nobody has to hunt for coins. The effective tip percentage is always shown.
How do you split a bill that will not divide evenly?
Cent-exact splitting is impossible for most totals, so the calculator gives the leftover one or two cents to the first people in the list. The shares always add up to the exact total, which is what matters when one person pays the card machine.
Do my figures get sent anywhere?
No. The whole calculator is JavaScript running in your browser. There is no server request, no account and no analytics on the numbers you enter.
