Two numbers, not one
Birth weights, parcels and small goods are quoted as pounds and ounces, and that second number is where conversions go wrong. 3.4 kg is 7.4957 pounds. The fractional part, 0.4957 lb, is 7.9 ounces — not 5 ounces, not 49 ounces. Getting it right means multiplying the remainder by sixteen, and that is exactly what the composite readout here does.
How the split works
- Convert to decimal pounds: 3.4 kg ÷ 0.45359237 = 7.4957 lb.
- Keep the whole pounds: 7 lb.
- Multiply the remainder by 16: 0.4957 × 16 = 7.93 oz.
- Round the ounces last, and roll over to another pound if they reach 16.
That final rollover is the step naive converters skip, which is how you end up reading "7 lb 16 oz" on a form.

The average birth weight in most high-income countries is around 3.3–3.5 kg, which is why "seven and a half pounds" sounds like the default. The WHO low-birth-weight threshold is 2.5 kg, or 5 lb 8 oz.
Parcels and hand luggage
Courier rate cards in the US step in pounds and ounces below a pound and in whole pounds above; European ones step in grams. A 500 g parcel is 1 lb 1.6 oz, which prices as a 2 lb item in a whole-pound band. Where a boundary is close, weigh in the unit the carrier prices in rather than converting a rounded figure across.
This converter goes both ways
Type into the right-hand box to convert pounds back to kilograms, or press the swap button to flip the pair. The composite pounds-and-ounces readout keeps working in either direction because it is computed from the underlying mass rather than from whichever box you typed in.
Questions
What is 3.4 kg in pounds and ounces?
7 lb 7.9 oz. The decimal answer, 7.4957 lb, is the same number — the fractional part is 0.4957 of a pound, which is 7.9 ounces, not 5 ounces.
Why is this the format hospitals use?
In the US and UK, birth weight is announced in pounds and ounces even where the chart records kilograms. The conversion between them is where the transcription errors happen, which is why the exact remainder matters.
What counts as a low birth weight?
The WHO threshold is 2.5 kg, which is 5 lb 8.2 oz. This is a unit converter, not medical advice — any concern about a baby's weight belongs with a midwife or paediatrician.
Can I go the other way?
Yes. Type into the right-hand box, or press the swap button, and it converts pounds back to kilograms with the same exact factor.
