Which ounce?
Before converting anything, settle which ounce you mean. There are three in common use and they are not close:
| Ounce | In grams | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Avoirdupois (weight) | 28.349523125 g | Food, post, everything on this page |
| Troy | 31.1034768 g | Gold, silver, platinum |
| US fluid ounce (volume) | 29.5735 mL | Liquids in US recipes |
A troy ounce is about 10% heavier than an avoirdupois one, which is why a "one ounce" gold coin weighs 31.1 g. And a fluid ounce is not a weight at all — it only equals 29.6 g for something with the density of water.
Divide by 28.349523125
That factor is exact: the avoirdupois pound is defined as 0.45359237 kg, and there are sixteen ounces in it. So 100 g is 3.5274 oz, 250 g is 8.8185 oz, and 1 kg is 35.274 oz — which is 2 lb 3.27 oz in the pounds-and-ounces readout.
The values that come up in a kitchen
- 113 g — one US stick of butter, which is 4 oz exactly (113.4 g)
- 225–227 g — half a pound, the size of a British butter half-block
- 450–454 g — one pound; recipes round it to 450 g
- 28 g — one ounce, the standard portion size on nutrition labels for nuts and cheese
- 340 g — 12 oz, a common US can and packet size
British recipes published before about 1975 are in ounces throughout, and the safest way to use them is to convert every ingredient to grams once, write the converted list down, and cook from that rather than converting on the fly.
Postage boundaries
Postal rate bands are set in whole ounces in the US and in grams elsewhere, and the boundaries do not line up. A 100 g letter is 3.53 oz, which falls in the 4 oz band; a 3 oz limit is 85.05 g. Because a band boundary is a step change in price, converting a rounded figure can push you into the next band on paper when the actual item is under. Weigh in the unit your carrier prices in.
Pounds and ounces, done properly
The composite readout on this page splits a weight into whole pounds plus the remainder in ounces, carrying correctly so you never see "3 lb 16 oz". 1,500 g, for example, is 52.91 oz, which is 3 lb 4.91 oz — the format a parcel counter or a set of scales will show.
Questions
How many grams in an ounce?
28.349523125 g exactly, for the avoirdupois ounce used for food and post. The troy ounce used for precious metals is different — 31.1034768 g.
Is a fluid ounce the same thing?
No, and the two are unrelated. A fluid ounce measures volume (29.57 mL in the US). This page converts weight only.
What is 100 g in ounces?
3.5274 oz — just over three and a half. 500 g is 17.64 oz, and 1 kg is 35.27 oz or 2 lb 3.3 oz.
Why does my postage calculator disagree by a gram?
Postal tables round to whole ounces and then convert, which introduces up to 28 g of slack at the boundary. Weigh in grams and convert once, rather than converting a rounded ounce figure.
