How to make a meme

  1. Drop in a template or any photo. It is decoded by your browser — there is no upload step and no queue.
  2. Two caption boxes appear straight away, in the classic top-and-bottom position. Click one and type over the placeholder.
  3. Drag a caption anywhere on the image, or select it and nudge it with the arrow keys (hold Shift for bigger steps).
  4. Adjust size, outline thickness and wrap width until it looks right, then download PNG, JPG or WebP.

Why memes use Impact — and what to do when you do not have it

Impact was drawn in 1965 as a poster face: extremely heavy strokes, tiny counters and almost no space between letters. That is precisely what makes it readable when it is scaled down to a thumbnail in a feed, and it is why the format stuck. The convention that came with it — white fill, black outline, all caps — exists for the same reason: white-on-black survives any background, and the outline keeps the letters legible over a bright sky or a dark shadow alike.

Impact ships with Windows and macOS. It does not ship with most Linux distributions or with Android. Because this page never loads a remote font — that would be a network request on a tool that promises none — the generator falls back to the heaviest condensed sans your device does have. If your captions look thin, pick Heavy sans from the font list, which targets Arial Black and its equivalents, and increase the outline a little to compensate.

Settings that matter, and sensible values

ControlGood defaultWhat it changes
Size10–12% of image heightClassic meme captions are large; below about 6% the text disappears in a feed thumbnail.
Outline thickness12–16%Measured against the font size, so it scales with the text. Below 8% the outline vanishes on busy photos.
Wrap width90%Where lines break. Narrow it to force a two-line caption, widen it for one long line.
UppercaseOnApplies at render time, so your typing stays readable while you edit.
White space above/below0%, or 15% for the caption-bar styleAdds bars outside the photo so text never covers the image.

Exporting for each platform

  • Discord, Slack, WhatsApp: PNG keeps the letter edges perfectly sharp and these platforms do not re-compress hard. If the file is over the attachment limit, switch to JPG at quality 85.
  • Twitter/X and Instagram: both re-encode whatever you send. Export at the largest resolution you have and let them do the shrinking — uploading a small file just means their encoder starts from less detail.
  • Reddit: PNG for anything with flat colour or a caption bar; JPG for photographic templates, which would otherwise be needlessly large.
  • Printing: export PNG, then use Change Image DPI to tag it at 300 DPI so it prints at the intended physical size.

Why there is no watermark

Almost every meme site adds one, because the image is generated on their server and the watermark is free advertising for them. Here the image is generated by your browser: there is no server involved, so there is nothing to advertise and no reason to brand your file. The canvas you see in the preview is the canvas that gets encoded — the only difference is that the selection outline around the caption you are editing is drawn after the export copy is made, so it never appears in the download.

Related things you might want next

If you only need one caption in a specific place rather than the top-and-bottom convention, Add Text to Image starts with a single box and no outline. To build a multi-panel meme, lay the frames out first with Combine Images and then caption the finished sheet. And if the result is too large for a chat attachment limit, compress it to 500 KB — the search shows you exactly what quality it settled on.

Questions

Will there be a watermark on my meme?

No. There is no watermark, no signup and no paid tier — the canvas you see is exported byte for byte. Nothing is added to the image at any point.

Why does my text not look like Impact?

Impact ships with Windows and macOS but not with most Linux distributions or Android. Because we never load remote fonts, the generator falls back to the heaviest condensed sans your device does have. Pick “Heavy sans” from the font list for a consistent look.

Can I put text below the image instead of on top of it?

Yes — use the “white space below” slider to add a bar under the photo, then drag the caption into it. That is the classic Reddit/Tumblr layout and it keeps the photo unobstructed.

Does the meme keep the original resolution?

Yes. The preview is scaled down so it fits your screen, but the export re-renders every caption at the full pixel size of the source image, so the text stays crisp.

Is my template image uploaded anywhere?

No. It is decoded by your browser, drawn onto a canvas and encoded back to a file locally. You can turn off your network connection before you start and everything still works.
