Why some styles look plain on some devices
These characters are substitutes drawn from the Unicode maths, enclosed-alphanumeric and phonetic blocks — not a font. If a device has no glyph for one of them you see a box or a plain letter instead. Bold, italic, script, monospace and fullwidth are the safest across iOS, Android, Windows and the major social apps. Screen readers will usually read mathematical letters out character by character, so avoid them for anything that matters, such as your actual name.

How a line gets through plain text

Unicode has a category of characters called combining marks. They have no width of their own; they attach to the character immediately before them and the font draws both together. Putting U+0336 COMBINING LONG STROKE OVERLAY after every letter gives you a strikethrough that is part of the text rather than part of the formatting.

Why the line sometimes looks broken

Each mark is drawn per character, so the line is really a row of short strokes. Whether they join depends on the font: monospace and condensed fonts join cleanly, while wide proportional fonts leave visible gaps, especially around spaces and narrow letters like i and l. If the standard mark looks gappy, try the short-stroke or slash variant — the slash in particular never looks broken, because it was never meant to be continuous.

Those produce proper formatting that renders consistently and stays searchable. This page is for everywhere else: bios, form fields, spreadsheet cells, plain-text notes, and the many apps that have no formatting at all.

Search stops finding the words

Adding a combining mark changes the byte sequence, so a plain-text search for the original word no longer matches. Sometimes that is exactly the effect people want — a crossed-out phrase that does not show up in a search — and sometimes it is a nasty surprise when you later try to find your own note. Worth knowing before you strike through a whole document.

How it is read aloud

Badly, generally. Screen readers vary: some ignore combining marks and read the text normally, some announce each mark, and some fall back to spelling the word out. A real strikethrough in a document is announced as such and can be skipped by the listener; this cannot. If the crossing out carries meaning — a price that no longer applies, a task that is done — say so in words as well.

Copying safely

Combining marks are invisible characters, so a partial selection can leave a stray mark behind or drop one from the start. Use the copy button next to each style rather than selecting by hand, particularly on a phone.

Questions

How does strikethrough work without any formatting?

Each character is followed by U+0336, a combining long stroke overlay. The font draws the line through the character it follows, so the effect travels with the plain text.

Why does the line look broken between letters?

Because it is one short stroke per character, and how far each stroke extends is up to the font. Proportional fonts with wide letter spacing show small gaps. Try the short-stroke variant.

Does this work in Discord and Slack?

Both have their own markdown for it — wrap text in double tildes in Discord. Use their native syntax where it exists; this page is for the places that offer nothing, such as bios and form fields.

Will search still find the crossed-out words?

Usually not. The combining marks change the byte sequence, so a plain-text search for the same word will miss it. That is occasionally useful and frequently a nuisance.
