How to count the pages in a PDF

  1. Drop one PDF — or a whole folder of them — onto the box above.
  2. Each file gets a card with its page count, metadata and page-size breakdown.
  3. The summary at the top adds everything up; copy it as text or download a CSV.
  4. Press Measure page weights on any file to see which pages carry the bulk of the file size.

Counting is instant because a PDF stores its page count in the document catalogue — the tool does not need to render anything to answer the question.

Standard paper sizes in points

PDF measures everything in PostScript points: 1 point = 1/72 inch = 0.3528 mm. The tool matches each page against these sizes with a small tolerance and reports anything else as a custom size.

Size Points Millimetres Inches
A3842 × 1191297 × 42011.69 × 16.54
A4595 × 842210 × 2978.27 × 11.69
A5420 × 595148 × 2105.83 × 8.27
Letter612 × 792216 × 2798.5 × 11
Legal612 × 1008216 × 3568.5 × 14
Tabloid792 × 1224279 × 43211 × 17

Reading the metadata

  • Producer is the library that wrote the file; Creator is the application the content came from. Together they usually reveal how a document was made — a scanner driver, a word processor, a LaTeX toolchain.
  • PDF version tells you which feature set the file relies on. 1.4 is the old universal baseline, 1.7 is the ISO standard used by most current software, 2.0 is the newest revision.
  • Linearized means the file is arranged so a reader can display page one before the rest has downloaded — common for documents published on the web.
  • Contains a form flags an AcroForm, which is worth knowing before you flatten or rasterise the file and lose the fields.

Metadata is stored in plain text inside the file. If you are sending a document outside your organisation, it is worth checking what the Author and Title fields say — they often still hold a template's original owner.

How per-page weight is measured

There is no field in a PDF that says how many bytes a page occupies — content is shared, compressed and interleaved. To get a usable number, each page is exported on its own into a minimal one-page document and that document is measured. Pages carrying a big scan or photo stand out immediately.

Two caveats: resources shared between pages (fonts, logos) are counted once per page, so the individual figures add up to more than the file size, and the measurement re-saves every page, which takes a moment on long documents. Use it as a relative ranking, not an audit.

Questions

Can I count pages across many files at once?

Yes. Drop in a whole folder of PDFs and you get a per-file page count plus a grand total you can copy or export as CSV.

What does the per-page weight column mean?

Each page is re-saved on its own and measured, which shows which pages carry the heavy images. It is an estimate, because shared fonts are counted in every page.

Which paper size names are detected?

A0 to A6, Letter, Legal, Tabloid, Executive and the common B sizes, matched with a small tolerance and reported in points, millimetres and inches.

Does it work on password-protected PDFs?

The page count and version usually still read, but encrypted content and metadata may be unavailable. The tool tells you when a file is encrypted.
