Put multiple PDF pages on one sheet (N-up)

Print 2, 4, 6, 9 or 16 PDF pages on one sheet with true vector output, adjustable gaps, borders and order. Save paper without losing sharpness.

Your PDF never leaves this tab — here is how to check

This page has no upload step and no server behind it. Two ways to confirm that yourself, neither of which requires trusting us:

  • Turn off Wi-Fi or put the device in aeroplane mode after this page has loaded, then run the tool. It still works.
  • Open your browser’s developer tools, switch to the Network tab, clear it, and process a file. No request appears.

The reason this matters: in 2025 the PDF service pdf.net was found exposing roughly 3.5 million user-uploaded documents, and formatter sites JSONFormatter.org and CodeBeautify leaked over 80,000 saved snippets containing live cloud credentials. Those are architectural failures — a file that is never sent cannot be exposed that way.

N-up printing, baked into the file

Every desktop print driver can put several pages on a sheet, and every one of them hides the setting somewhere different, forgets it between jobs, and gives you no way to check the result before paper comes out. Producing the N-up layout as a PDF instead makes it part of the document: you can proof it, email it, print it from a phone, or hand it to a print shop and get exactly what you saw.

How many pages per sheet is still readable?

Layout Grid on A4 Each page becomes 11 pt text reads as
2-up2 × 1 landscape~70% of A4~7.8 pt — comfortable
4-up2 × 2 portrait~49%~5.4 pt — readable, close up
6-up2 × 3 portrait~40%~4.4 pt — skim only
9-up3 × 3~32%~3.5 pt — headings only
16-up4 × 4~24%~2.6 pt — a visual index

The percentages assume a 10 mm outer margin and a 5 mm gap; reduce those and every figure improves slightly. Use 2-up for something you will actually read, 4-up for lecture handouts, and 9-up or 16-up as a contact sheet for finding a page rather than reading it.

Why the output stays sharp

Each source page is turned into a PDF form XObject — a reusable, still-vector description of the page — and placed on the sheet with a scaling matrix. No pixels are involved. Text remains real text, so the output is searchable and copyable, and it prints at the full resolution of the device rather than at whatever DPI a rasteriser would have chosen.

The practical consequence: 4-up output from this tool is legibly sharper than 4-up produced by any service that renders pages to images first, which is what most browser-based converters do.

Across then down, or down then across

In a 2 × 2 grid, “across then down” places pages 1 and 2 on the top row and 3 and 4 on the bottom. “Down then across” places 1 and 3 in the left column and 2 and 4 in the right. The first matches how a Latin-script reader scans a page and is the default; the second is what you want when the sheets will be guillotined into columns and stacked, which is how small booklets are cut.

The numbered preview grid updates live so you can see which one you are getting.

Printing it

  • Choose actual size or 100% in the print dialog. “Fit to page” scales an already-shrunk sheet a second time.
  • Do not also enable the driver’s own multiple-pages-per-sheet option, or you will get 4 pages of 4 pages.
  • Turn on the thin border if you intend to cut the sheet up — it gives you a line to follow.
  • For double-sided N-up, print on both sides with “flip on long edge” so the grids line up back to back.

This is not booklet imposition

A saddle-stitched booklet needs pages reordered as 8-1, 2-7, 6-3, 4-5 so that folding the stack produces the right sequence. That is a different operation and this tool does not do it — it lays pages out in reading order. If you need a folded booklet, impose the pages first with Organize PDF and then run 2-up here.

Questions

Why make an N-up PDF instead of using the printer driver?

Because the layout becomes part of the file. You can check it before printing, email it, print it from a phone or a public printer that has no N-up option, and get the identical result every time rather than depending on a driver setting.

Will the small pages be blurry?

No. Each source page is embedded as a vector form and scaled by the PDF itself, so text remains real text — selectable, searchable and sharp at any print resolution. Only bitmap photographs get denser, which improves rather than degrades them.

What does “auto” orientation actually choose?

It lays the grid out on both a portrait and a landscape sheet, measures the shrink factor each one needs, and keeps whichever leaves the pages larger. For 2-up on portrait source pages that is usually landscape; for 4-up it is usually portrait.

How small does 9-up or 16-up text get?

A 4 × 4 grid on A4 gives each page about 45 × 65 mm, roughly 21% of full size, which turns 11 pt body text into the equivalent of 2.3 pt — legible only as a visual index. Use 2-up or 4-up for anything you actually intend to read.

Should I print it at 100%?

Yes. Choose “actual size” rather than “fit to page” in the print dialog, otherwise the printer scales the sheet a second time and the already-small text shrinks further.
